Um alienígena vem a Terra e adota o disfarce de um homem de negócios chamado Thomas Jerome Newton. A sua missão é encontrar água para o seu planeta que está morrendo. Ele utiliza a tecnologia avançada que traz consigo para ganhar bilhões de dólares, que serão necessários para construir a espaçonave que irá levá-lo de volta para casa junto com a água. Mas o gentil Newton não está preparado para a ganância e a crueldade de seus novos colegas de negócios e rivais e logo descobre que a missão será muito mais difícil do que ele havia imaginado...
